Proposta di vendita - Auburn Speedster 851 Super-charged del 1974
La Auburn Speedster stata un'auto americana costruita dalla Auburn Automobile Company di Auburn nello stato dell'Indiana.La prima Auburn 8 fu lanciata nel 1925 e ribattezzata 8-88 nel 1926 quando fu dotata di un motore Lycoming 4.8 a valvole laterali da 68 BHP (69CV). Cos rimase fino al 1930 quando fu sviluppato un motore da 115 BHP che diede anche il nome al modello Speedster 115. Il resto dell'auto era essenziale. Le sospensioni erano tutte a molle semi ellittiche e, dopo gli esperimenti con i freni idraulici, la Auburn fu dotata di freni meccanici. La scatola del cambio a tre marce era incorporata al motore. L'appariscente carrozzeria aperta a due posti disegnata dal Conte Alexis de Sakhnoffsky richiamava la coda di una barca ed aveva un parabrezza a V. Nel 1930 la 115 divenne la 125 e fu pubblicizzata come un'auto da corsa con il comfort di una vettura chiusa, aveva una versione da 125BHP del motore Lycoming che consentiva di raggiungere le 100 miglia orarie.
L'ultima memorabile avventura della Auburn fu la 851 Speedster. Fu presentata nel 1931 ed era stata disegnata da Gordon Buehrig e costruita con ingegno e parsimonia. Era una vettura abbastanza semplice ed il motore si era rivelato forte e affidabile. Le linee ampie nascondevano interessanti accorgimenti tecnici come il retrotreno Columbia a due velocit (Columbia dual-ratio rear axle) comandato da una leva situata vicino al volante. In questo modo il cambio a tre velocit diventava un cambio a sei velocit. Nel 1936 venne presentata la 852, identica ai modelli precedenti eccetto che per la scritta 852 sulla griglia del radiatore. La Auburn cess la produzione nel 1937 ma la sua linea a coda di barca fu ripresa su molte auto nei decenni successivi.

The Auburn Speedster was an American car, manufactured by the Auburn Automobile Company of Auburn, Indiana. The first Auburn eight was launched in 1925, and renamed the 8-88 in 1926 with a 4.8-liter side-valve 68 bhp Lycoming engine. That remained in use until 1930, when it developed 115 bhp, hence the &Speedster 115& model name. The rest of the car was straightforward. Suspension was by semi-elliptic springs all round, and after experiments with hydraulic brakes, Auburn opted for mechanical brakes. The three-speed gearbox was in unit with the engine. The impressive open two-seater body styled by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky featured a boat-tail and a vee windscreen. The &115& became the &125& in 1930, advertised as a &racing car with comfort of a closed car& with a 125 bhp version of the Lycoming eight giving it a claimed top speed of over 100 mph.
Yet Auburn was to enjoy a memorable final fling with the &851 speedster&. This was introduced in 1931 with masterly bodywork by Gordon Buehrig that was ingeniously and cheaply built. The car was simple enough. The flat-head eight was strong, reliable and it was not overly stressed. Those sweeping lines concealed some interesting technical features such as the Columbia dual-ratio rear axle. It was engaged or disengaged by moving a steering-wheel mounted lever. The three-speed synchromesh gearbox along with that dual ratio axle gave a six-speed transmission. In 1936 came the 852, identical to the earlier models with the exception of the &852& on its radiator grille. The end however, was not far off, and Auburn ceased car production in 1937 but the Speedster's iconic &boattail& design would be replicated on cars from later decades.
MAINTENANCE: 1974 Auburn Speedster 851 Super-charged. Auburn built replica with Chevrolet 5.7 V8 engine. Italian plate and papers. Only 29000 miles. Professional restoration. ASI golden plate.
